How it works

Loose change in, a bill marked paid out.

There are two ways into The Coin Jar. You either put something in, or you need something out. Both paths are short, and a person is on the other end of each one.

Nothing is paid in cash
Funds go straight to the landlord, utility or provider
Every application is read
By a person, not a scoring form
You will hear back
Even if the answer is no
If you are giving

Your money never touches a middle step it does not need.

You set an amount. It joins the jar. When a need is verified, your gift is part of what pays it — and we tell you what it went to.

Give to the jar →
If you need help

Tell us the number and the deadline. That is most of the form.

No essay, no proving your worth. We need to know what is due, to whom, by when — and enough to confirm it is real.

Apply for support →
The giving path

Four steps, and only the first one needs you.

01

You choose an amount

Monthly or one-time, from ten dollars up. Monthly is the one we can plan around, which is why we ask for it first.

02

It goes into the jar

Gifts are pooled rather than earmarked. That is what lets us answer a mother in days instead of waiting for a matching donor.

03

A need is matched to it

When an application is verified, the board releases funds against a specific bill with a specific due date.

04

You find out what it did

We report back on what the jar covered. Names stay private; the arithmetic does not.

The support path

What happens after you press submit.

  1. 01
    We read it

Usually within a few days. If anything is unclear we email you rather than guessing.

  2. 02
    A short conversation

A call or an exchange of messages. We confirm the amount, the provider and the timing — nothing about how you got here.

  3. 03
    Light verification

A copy of the bill or a note from the provider. Enough that we can pay them directly and account for it honestly.

  4. 04
    We pay the provider

Not you — them. It keeps the money clean, keeps our books clear, and means one fewer thing on your list.

  5. 05
    The door stays open

Coaching, budgeting and career support are yours whether or not we could fund the bill.

If we cannot help, we will tell you plainly and point you to someone who can. You will not be left waiting on a form.
The fine print, in plain words

What the jar covers, and what it does not.

We can usually help with
Rent, a deposit, or past-due rent
Utilities, including a reconnection fee
Childcare so a shift can be worked
A car repair or unexpected expense that is blocking work
A one-time medical or school cost
Coaching, budgeting and career support, always free
We are not set up for
Cash paid to an individual
Open-ended monthly income support (our Financial Stability Program runs up to six months)
Debt consolidation or loan repayment
Legal fees or court costs
Anything we cannot pay a provider directly for
If your situation is not on either list, ask anyway. These are patterns, not rules, and the board can look at anything once.

You have read the why. Here is the how.

A monthly gift is the one we can plan around. If you are a mother who needs help, the application takes a few minutes and a person reads every one.
